Monthly Favourites: May 2016

Hi there! The month of May literally flew by and now it’s nearly over. But that means it’s time to show off a few of my favourite goodies.

OGX Thick & Full Biotin & Collagen Shampoo and Conditioner

This particular shampoo and conditioner is perfect for adding thickness and fullness to my fine hair.  It contains Vitamin B7 and collagen, with an amazing smell. I love anything OGX- I haven’t found a single product of theirs that I haven’t liked.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal in 70 Barely Branded

This light champagne cream eyeshadow has been my go to eyeshadow base for the past month.  I originally bought this because I heard this is a great dupe for Mac’s Bare Study Paintpot, which I’ve used for years.  Needless to say, it’s super comparable to Mac’s for a fraction of the cost.

L’oreal Voluminous Orignal Mascara in Blackest Black

After hearing great things about this mascara in the beauty community, I decided to give it a try this month.  I love that it adds a great deal of both volume AND length.  Plus it’s SO affordable.

Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector

This product is my new favourite in my everyday make-up routine.  It works great for fair skin, brightening up my horrible dark circles.  You can find my full review and demo here!

Secret Clinical Strength Stress Response Clear Gel Deodorant

This deodorant is an old favourite of mine that I recently started using again.  It is used before bed and in the AM to reduce excess perspiration while you sleep. I’ve noticed a huge difference in how much I sweat throughout the day, especially at work.

What have you been loving this month?

My Top 5 Favourite Neutrogena Products

Hi there! After going through my bathroom skin-care cabinet I realized just how many Neutrogena products make up my daily skin-care routine.  After dealing with moderate to severe acne for many years, Neutrogena’s gentle products have made a huge impact on my skin.  Here are my top 5 favourite Neutrogena products that I can’t live without!

IMG_5572.JPGThese make-up removers are AMAZING at removing my makeup gently, without ever drying my skin out.  In the past, I used Neutrogena’s All-in-One Make-Up Removing Cleaning Wipes but I wanted to switch to new products that I didn’t have to buy so often.

1. Neutrogena All-in-One Make-up Removing Cleansing Lotion is yes, a lotion but the formula is my absolute favourite.  After massaging a couple pumps over my face, all of my face make-up comes off with a few swipes of a cotton pad.  My face feels SO soft after removing my makeup, and then I follow up with my go-to cleanser.  Besides the softness, this bottle typically lasts me for about 6-8 months.  With one bottle costing only around $8.00 CAD, it seriously saves me a ton of money.

2. Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Make-up Remover is a life saver of mine.  It removes the toughest of eye-makeup with only a drop on a cotton pad.  It actually contains aloe and cucumber, leaving my eye area feeling extremely smooth and hydrated.   Again, this bottle lasts me well over 6 months and costs around $7.00-8.00 CAD.  You can’t go wrong!

Nothing compares to a good moisturizer, as I’m a firm believer that a good make-up application depends on healthy, moisturized skin.  However, over the years I neglected my skin in the moisturizing department because my skin was so oily.  Truth is, regardless of my oily skin, moisture is still needed and actually helps regulate my oils.

3. Neutrogena Moisture Oil-Free Facial Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin helped me through my accutane journey and continues to keep my skin healthy, used both in the AM and PM.  It’s lightweight, non greasy and fragrance free.  A simple product that moisturizers my skin perfectly, without the unnecessary bells and whistles that most acne prone skin moisturizers claim to have.

4. Neutrogena Healthy Defence Daily Moisturizer with SPF 45 is actually my newest addition to my little Neutrogena family, bought specifically for the summer.  Being that my skin is so fair, my  face actually becomes rashy and red when exposed to direct sunlight.  On summer days when I wear absolutely no face make-up, I like to use this in the AM to avoid sunburn and premature aging.  It has a very light scent, non greasy and absorbs really quickly into my skin without leaving a white cast on my face.

5. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Gel Cream keeps my eye area moisturized, no longer having to worry about those awful dry patches that can form around my eye area. Used in the AM and PM, a little dot of this product goes a long way.  Being a gel formula, the application is immediately refreshing and absorbs quickly without any fragrance. Plus, it’s never too early to prevent signs of aging, right?

What are your favourite Neutrogena products?

Queen Helene Mint Julep Scrub & Masque Review

Hi there! Does your skin need some minty TLC during the dry summer months? These two products have been a skincare secret weapon of mine for a couple of years now.  Despite having been on accutane last year and achieving great results, I would still consider my skin oily and acne prone.  However, my skin now becomes extremely dry after using harsh scrubs or masks.  This is not the case with my favourite Queen Helene products!

Both the Queen Helene Mint Julep Scrub and Masque for oily and acne prone skin can be found at Sally’s Beauty Supply varying in price from $3.99-$7.69, depending on Canadian or U.S. dollars.  Regardless, this mask is extremely affordable.  Find the scrub here! and find the masque here!

Queen Helene Mint Julep ScrubIMG_0852.jpg

The Queen Helene Mint Julep Scrub for oily and acne prone skin is by far my favourite holy grail scrub. It comes in a 170 g/6oz tube and has lasted me for about a year, being used weekly at most.

The texture of this scrub is extremely fine, a unique texture compared to many other scrubs I have tried over the years.  In addition, it contains Glycerin which helps to maintain moisture balance.  This is why I LOVE this stuff, exfoliating the skin without any irritation and moisture loss makes for a perfect scrub.

Since being on accutane, my skin is quite sensitive to many products and particular scents.  However, this scrub has a scent that is particularly fresh and minty, but not at all strong.

Prior to use, I always make sure my skin is throughly cleansed and my pores are open.  I prefer to use this mask after either a hot shower or an at home facial steam.  After my pores are open, I massage the scrub in while focusing on problematic black head areas.  After the scrub is washed off, I splash my face with cooler water to close my pores.  My face is instantly ultra soft without any dry patches.  I particularly like using this scrub after large breakouts have healed.  I find it exfoliates away the dead skin from these old breakouts and makes way for healthy, clear skin.

Queen Helene Mint Julep MasqueIMG_0849.jpg

The Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque for oily and acne prone skin is one of my favourite masks.  I have the 340 g/12 oz jar which has lasted me for over a year, being used weekly or even bi weekly at times.  I also believe it comes in a tube format as well.

The texture of this mask is very creamy when wet and fairly easy to spread onto the face. As it dries and hardens, you can actually feel a tingly sensation.

Compared to the scrub, I find the mask has a bit stronger minty smell. I’m not complaining though, it’s very refreshing.

Similar to the scrub, I make sure my skin is throughly cleansed and my pores are always open prior to application.  I then apply the masque to my face and neck in a fairly thin layer, leaving on my skin for about 10 minutes at most.  After the masque is washed off, I splash my face with cooler water to close my pores. Contrary to popular belief, the newest formula of this masque is quite easy to wash off.

All in all, both of these products are approved by my oily and acne prone skin.  I cannot deny the fact that my skin looks and feels amazing after the Queen Helene Mint Julep Scrub & Masque.

BECCA Under Eye Brightening Corrector Review & Demo

Hi there! Let’s talk about those dreaded under eye circles.  Since my high school years I have suffered from unattractive dark rings under my eyes, contrasting heavily with my fair skin.  Despite getting an adequate amount of sleep and feeling good, I used numerous eye gels and caked on the concealer to feel confident.

Quite recently I came across the BECCA Under Eye Brightening Corrector.  You can find it at Sephora for $36.00 CAD Found Here! I was a bit hesitant about making this purchase, given the countless under eye products I’ve tried over the years.  In addition, the price seemed a little steep, especially to a first time buyer of this product.

IMG_0805 IMG_0815 (1).jpg

The packaging is quite sleek and simple, with a glass jar and rose gold lid.  You get 4.5g/0.16 0z of a product, a size that is quite similar to that of a MAC paint pot.  A little product goes a long way with this corrector so I don’t image you’d go through this jar extremely fast.

The formula is fairly smooth with a bit of stickiness to it. The main ingredients consist of castor seed oil and wax from a Japanese wax tree, explaining it’s creamy but tacky consistency.  The company also claims that this product is paraben free, yay!

It smells very similar to MAC lipsticks, but definitely not a noticible scent when it is applied to the face.

This corrector is slightly luminescent, in a light pink shade. This is made to reflect light and brighten the under eye area.

Prior to applying this product, I used my Estee Lauder DayWear BB Anti-Oxidant Cream with SPF 35 in Light (01), on freshly cleansed and moisturized skin. Using the Real Techniques detailer brush from their Core Collection, I patted the under eye and gently blended in a small amount of the corrector.

This first comparison photo is bare skin vs my BB cream and the corrector, no concealer or foundation used.  This corrector covers and brightens my under eye area beautifully, and does not look or feel cakey at all. As you can see, this corrector can easily be used without any concealer for a more natural look.

This second comparison photo is bare skin vs a full foundation and concealer application, in addition to the corrector.  I used the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Chantilly and it seemed to flawlessly complement this corrector.

After 8 hours of wear in +30 degree weather, my under eye area was still looking great by the end of the day. For the best wear of this product, make sure to use an under eye setting powder.  I used the ELF High Definition Undereye Setting Powder, an affordable powder that works well with this corrector.

I would recommend this corrector to anyone with pale to fair complexions, as the shade of this corrector is very light.  This may not be very complementing on darker complexions, casting a white glow around the eyes.  Despite this fact, I’m SO glad I decided to try the BECCA Under Eye Brightening Corrector for my fair skin. The proof is in the pictures!

Shany Essential Pro Makeup Train Case Review

Hi there!  I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect train case for about a year now, searching for an affordable but spacious storage solution for my makeup essentials.  Being a college student on the go, lugging my growing makeup collection in a simple makeup bag was never enough.  In addition, my loose powders were becoming very messy due to the fact that they were not being transported upright.  I figured a train case would be the perfect solution.

After browsing, I came across the Shany Essential Pro Makeup Train Case With Shoulder Straps and Locks .  They come in a variety of colours and prints, each differing in price. I chose the silver, retailing for $62.69 CAD. Found here!

Shipping was free since Amazon offers free standard shipping with a minimum $25.00 purchase.  It came in only 5 days, as I ordered it on April 20 and received it on April 25.  The Shany box came in another box (since I had ordered other items from Amazon) and was not dented or damaged in anyway.  It also came with a cute little thank you note/brochure!

Pros / Cons:IMG_0715

The Pros:

  • Sleek and attractive design
  • Extremely spacious and holds all of my essential makeup products with ease
  • Removable dividers allowed me to customize the organization
  • Easy to clean plastic

The Cons:

  • Removing the dividers on the second level is difficult
  • The foam on the bottom compartment sheds a little and hard to clean

My Verdict:IMG_0677.JPG

This train case is definitely a must-have for safely storing your makeup and taking it on the go.  Since the design is so sleek and attractive, hiding this train case in your room is not required.  Plus there are many other colours and patterns to choose from!

The removable dividers are an amazing feature, allowing you to customize how you organize your makeup.  I was able to fit all my favourite face products on one side of the train case with my go to eye products on the opposite side.  Leaving the bottom compartment for powders, lip products and extra eyeshadows.  This train case makes it a lot easier to clearly view all my products and choose what I need.

Overall, investing in properly storing and organizing my makeup with the Shany Essential Pro Makeup Train Case was well worth it.  You can also find this train case on Shany’s website. Found Here!
